What to Do When You Have a Clog

bubbling-drain

There are few things worse than being in the middle of a fun get-together with friends during summer and having the festivities come to a screeching halt because your kitchen sink isn’t draining. Drain clogs aren’t just annoying, they are a leading cause of interrupted conversations and ruined afternoons!

There is more than one way to deal with a drain clog but we want to let you know that not all solutions are created equal. Before you reach for the caustic chemicals, we want to give you some tips on how best to handle a drain clog, especially if the clog lies deeper than you realize.

3 Clog-Clearing Options

So, if you have a kitchen or bathroom drain that is all clogged up, you usually want to have the issues resolved sooner than later. While we know that using drain cleaning chemicals might seem like a quick and easy fix, this isn’t going to produce the results that you are looking for. Instead, you will want to use one of these options to clear the clog effectively:

  1. A plunger: We know this might seem silly but a plunger is going to be a better home remedy for a clog than those liquid chemicals. Using a plunger you can either force the clog to break up and pass through the drain or remove it altogether. The best part of this option is that almost every household has it on hand!
  2. An auger or drain snake: Drain snakes are great at clearing clogs that are a little more stubborn. This is a flexible cord with a drill-type bit at the end of it which can drill into the clog to push it through the drain or allow you to pull it free and clear the drain again.
  3. Hydro jetting: Hydro jets are highly effective for cleaning clogs and preventing them for a while afterward. This solution uses a high-pressure jet of water to not only obliterate that nasty clog, but all scour off any additional build-up in your drain that could cause clogs later on.

A Deeper Problem

These solutions are going to be helpful in almost every case, the exception being if you have a clog in your sewer line. If your sewer line is blocked then you definitely won’t get any help from store-bought drain cleaners. A sewer clog is always going to be a reason to reach out for professional plumbing assistance since only a pro will have the tools and the expertise to take care of the issue.
